Charles Dana is President and majority owner of Newport Shipyard. In September 1998, Charlie and partners purchased the Newport Shipyard from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The failing facility was being closely eyed by condominium developers, and Dana vowed to keep it the oldest and only operating shipyard on Newport Harbor. A new course was set, facilities were cleaned up and renovated, docks replaced and expanded, and its mission changed to cater to the mega-yacht business. Today the Newport Shipyard has established its reputation as a world class multi-dimensional facility, one of the finest worldwide.
Dana was Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and continues to serve on its Board of Trustees. He was a syndicate member of five America’s Cup campaigns from 1977-2003. He also currently serves as a Trustee at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Dana Foundation in New York. He is also Chairman of the Lyford Cay Club, Nassau, Bahamas. He is also a Trustee Emeritus of the Newport Restoration Foundation, created by the late Doris Duke.
Past trusteeships include Denver University, St. George’s School in Middletown, RI, Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, MA, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in MA, the Museum of Yachting in Newport, the Dartmouth Children’s Museum in Massachusetts, and the Waterfront Historic Area League in New Bedford, MA.
Born in New York on June 13, 1947, Dana graduated from the University of Denver in 1970 and married the former Rose Cutler in 1978. They have four children: Milo Ryan, Eli, Isabella, and Nicholas.
